Becoming obsessive with things is always a bad sign. Drug abuse is not just linked to alchol, cocaine or cannabis. There is also an increasing abuse of digital devices, sport or even sex. We talk to Hans R. Hoffmann how to overcome these problems. The therapist treats people suffering adictions of all kind on the small island of Gozo situated close to Malta
Do managers take today more drugs than 50 years ago?
I don't think so! Even 50 years ago, alcohol and drugs were still highly used! Even in discussion rounds on television at that time, alcohol was served! Along with cigars and cigarettes which were consumed in masses! 50 years ago, Pervitin was the drug par excellence! Temmler, a German pharmaceutical company, produced Pervitin. It is a methamphetamine! It is known today as Speed or Crystal-Meth. The company Hildebrandt sold chocolates with Pervitin to housewives to fight depression and raise the mood. So even then in the executive floor’s drugs were in use.
What is the most commonly used drug?
Cocaine, Crystal-Meth, Ritalin, Heroin and some prescription medication.
Are men more involved in drug abuse than women?
Statistically speaking, men are the first to be addicted! But I notice that more and more women in leading positions want to be treated by me. In these cases, alcohol is the preferred drug, but often a combination of alcohol and drugs happens!
How do you help them?
I naturally detoxify the body from the toxic substances, an electrolysis procedure with great effect. At the same time, I stimulate the Limbic system to start the production of neurotransmitters again immediately. In this way I avoid the painful withdrawal symptoms.
How long does this take?
The duration is 7 - 12 days here on my island! It is a ONE on ONE treatment and coaching that guarantees absolute discretion and treatment success. I work 6 to 9 hours a day with my clients!
What does it cost?
The treatment for alcohol costs 15.500€ and for drugs or medication the cost comes to 24.500€. This is an all-inclusive package, which includes transfers, accommodation, meals, all treatments, chef, yoga teacher and massage therapy.
Are there professions that are particularly known for drug abuse?
We find that there is alcohol abuse in all professions and for me alcohol is considered a drug. We find drugs like cocaine, crystal meth and Ritalin in professions with high deadline pressure. In these professions’ performance is required and these substances help them to be successful in the beginning. But after some time, the total collapse comes.
How should companies deal with it?
In my opinion, companies should help those affected and have discreet conversations that should preserve the manpower and resources for the company. Warnings and reprimands drive the affected person more and more into addiction and lead to total loss.
In my opinion, being admitted to rehab seems to be the norm in the USA. How do European managers normally deal with drug abuse?
Managers in Europe do not want to go to rehab, they must not be ill, it is just a matter of mentality! In Europe, the reputation is very important and whoever gets out loses his job very quickly! Managers have told me that they would rather kill themselves than come out. Unfortunately, there are cases that didn't have to be!
How are families involved in the healing process?
I involve the family or the partner. It is optional in the coaching process. I want to make sure the partners understand that it is not their fault and that it is best to help them look ahead and work on a life free of addiction. This does not mean living an abstinent life with an alcohol problem. In the case of a drug problem, abstinence is already prescribed by law!
Can we hope that there will be less drug addictions in the future?
I don't think so. Pharmaceutical companies are too powerful. They earn billions from the addiction of people.
We should rethink the idea that addiction is a habit that has unfortunately gone out of control and instead we should start to see it as a disease. This would be incredibly helpful in the fight to end the addiction spiral.
