WORK: Germany becomes more and more temporal

Fixed-term employment contracts were one of the major stumbling points in the GroKo negotiations between the Union and the SPD. Even today, millions of workers in Germany are only employed for a limited period. Yourfirm has evaluated the German print and online job market in 2017 specifically for temporary offers. With some surprising results.

A third of the young have to accept temporal contracts

According to the Federal Statistical office in 2016, approximately 4.8 million of the 32.8 million employees in Germany had a fixed-term employment contracts (14.7 %). However, this figure also includes approximately 1.3 million trainees whose contracts were limited. Without these employees, 10.7 percent of the employment contracts are limited. In any case, the federal government's response to a question from the socialist party “Die Linke” suggests: 45 percent of the 2016 newly concluded employment contracts were temporary (excluding trainees and minijobs). The basis was a survey of the IAB (Institute for Labour Market and vocational research). However, it is explicitly stated in the written answer that the figures of the IAB are extrapolated values from a sample, "which are accompanied by a certain degree of inaccuracy." If you look at the figures in more detail, it is clear, that mainly the young have to start their professional lives with fixed-term employment contracts. This means i.e. newcomers after training: around 63,500 of the positions advertised were targeted at "young professionals", of which almost 16,800 were temporary, at least 26.5 percent.

According to economic sectors, new employment contracts in the field of motor vehicle trade/repair are most frequently limited in time: from 490,000 job vacancies in this sector, 29 percent were temporary. This is followed by the areas of education (134,000 offers/ 27.9% temporary), public administrations (146,000/24.1%) and scientific, technical and Economic services (497,000/20.6%). Surprisingly high is the quota in the field of health and social professions: from 321,600 offered 18.5 percent was limited.

The exception to this is the construction industrie: from 121,350 jobs advertised, only 3.9% were limited. Among the average are the manufacturing sectors (444,000/7.2%), information/ communication (219,500/6.7%), finance and insurance (70,000/8.6%) and transport and logistics (94,000/10.2%). Despite the strong seasonal dependence, only 11.2 percent of the 198,000 vacancies in the area of hospitality, hotel and tourism are limited. Why?
