Life as a digital nomad

5 tips on how to establish your business working from wherever you want Claudia Lattner is a single mum and leader of a huge international team, who established her own coaching online business from scratch. According to herself, she helped already more than 2000 people to realize their dreams by starting their own businesses.

How did you get the idea to start your own business?

It all started almost 10 years ago in South America where I was traveling with my little daughter for 2 years. This was only possible with my savings and still, I was wondering if there was a possibility for me, as a single mum, to build a business independently of where I was at the moment. Back home I was working half-time and at the same time relying on social welfare, yet that dream was already there.

How did you start your business?

Sometimes life helps you when you really want something. Travelling has always been my passion and speaking different languages every day makes my heart beat faster. One day, a family member offered me a great opportunity and although I was really skeptical at the beginning, I realized that this could be the milestone that I needed for my dream to come true. Almost a decade later, this dream has become my reality now. I no longer have to constantly think about whether I can afford this or that. I can decide where, when and with whom I am working with and above all, I can help others to achieve their goals as well.

5 tips for people to become a digital nomad

1) Idea You need to ensure that your idea enables you to work independently of your location. A restaurant or a clothing store might not be the best business for a digital nomad. If you don’t know what you can offer or if you don’t want to invest much money, you can also think about working with a partner company, which does all the research, development, shipment, etc. You’d receive a commission by recommending their products for example. There are loads of business opportunities out there, but you need to be willing to see the opportunity. Grab it and just start. 2) Vision Everything starts with a dream. “If you can dream of it, you can do it.” So start thinking about what you really want and don’t worry about how to achieve it. The most important thing is that you are really excited about your dream and that you even get goosebumps at the thought of it. A good start for this is a vision board. This can be a blackboard, pinboard, or just a big piece of paper where you put up some dream related pictures. You should place your vision board in a place where you can see it all the time. And then just imagine how you will feel when this dream comes true. It sounds crazy, but it works. 3) Mentor Of course, you can just start your business and hope that everything turns out alright. But from my own experience, I can already tell that you’ll very probably make some mistakes. Therefore, I recommend that you look for a mentor. A good mentor or coach speaks from personal experience and not just on the basis of some theory. Working with such a mentor can save you a lot of time and help you build your business faster and more efficiently. 4) Work & perseverance Just hoping that something great will happen as long as you pray and visualize every day is a bit naive. I think – speaking from my own experience – there is hard work behind every success story. So, if you want to set up your own business, you must be willing to work hard for it. In stressful moments you will need a lot of perseverance. But let me tell you, it's worth staying on the ball. 5) Personal development „Work harder on yourself than on your business. “This quote from Jim Rohn helped me during my development years. If you don’t believe in yourself how can you expect others to believe in you? We need to learn, to become what we want to attract. Starting your own business is a personal development adventure. You might not believe me, but this is part of the journey. The last thing I’d like to share with you: I believe the biggest obstacles are those in our heads. If you want to achieve something, you must believe in yourself so that the impossible can become possible. Stick to it, work on yourself and your company and find a good mentor. I am sure that then your dream of today will become your reality of tomorrow. IF I CAN DO IT, YOU CAN DO IT. Believe in yourself and go for it!
